May 4, 1983, Forty Years Ago: CMs Head To Delhi

The chief ministers of Punjab and Haryana are going to Delhi for discussions on territorial and river waters issues with central leaders. But the prospect of an immediate resumption of talks with the Akalis remained grim with Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief G S Tohra declaring that no Akali leader would go to Delhi to have talks with central leaders.

Naxalites in Punjab

A number of Naxalites and terrorists are at present staying in the Golden Temple, including the much-publicised Guru Nanak Niwas, and spearheading violence from within the temple, it has been authoritatively learnt. Naxalites are staying there in the garb of Nihangs. Sant Jamail Singh Bhindranwale is understood to have been upset about the presence of Naxalites and other terrorists.

Haryana Dissidents

Haryana dissidents have decided to keep up their campaign for the replacement of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal. Dissidents have decided to camp at Delhi for about a week to meet central leaders. Three dissidents have reached Delhi.

ADB loan To India

Indian Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told the annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) that India looked to multilateral and bilateral sources of development assistance to bring about necessary structural adjustments in the face of massive balance of payments deterioration. Mukherjee did not refer to India’s pending request for a loan of $2 billion from the Asian Development Bank but spoke of how India had been the victim, like other developing countries, of price declines, weak external demand and restricted market access.
