Ludhiana gas leak: Industry apprehends harassment, demands audit of sewerage

While a probe is on to look into the reasons leading to toxic gas leakage, which killed 11 persons in Giaspura area of Ludhiana, a industry body from the district Monday raised apprehensions of “harassment” by the certain government departments. The Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings (CICU) also demanded a complete design audit of city’s sewerage system to find out root cause of the incident.

“Some government departments are targeting us despite the fact that the industry implemented norms and guidelines issued to run factories. The reason behind this incident is something different,” said Upkar Singh Ahuja, president of CICU.

Ahuja said the government should conduct a root cause analysis of the incident. “We demand the design audit of city sewerage system to find root cause of incident. We need to know whether sewerage vent pipes were installed in the sewerage system or if there were blockages. Industry is a soft target. Whenever any such incident occurs, industry is blamed for this,” said Ahuja later in a video message.

Ahuja also asked industry members if they are harassed, they should contact the CICU.
