IIT grad dies by suicide; was depressed, say police

A 22-year-old IIT graduate allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself at his residence in Mahim on Wednesday evening.

Although police have registered an accidental death report, they have learnt that he was depressed for the past three months.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Rohan Kumar Pawan Kumar Jha and he recently graduated from IIT Kanpur.

“He is from Bihar. He got a job with an insurance company in Mumbai through campus placement, after which he shifted here and started staying in a 3 BHK with two other friends,” said a police officer.

Police said around 6pm on Wednesday, Jha allegedly went to the kitchen, locked the door from inside and hanged himself to death.

Festive offer

The incident came to light when one of the house mates noticed that the kitchen was locked.

“He initially knocked on the door but there was no response. As he could not open the door, he sensed something amiss. He informed his other friends, who came over and broke open the door,” said the police officer.

Jha’s friends then informed police, after which he was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead.

Mahim police have registered an accidental death report and are probing the matter.

Senior inspector at Mahim police station Sudhakar Shirsath said, “We have not recovered any suicide note from their house. It appears that he was depressed for the past few months as he would not talk to anyone much. We suspect that depression led Jha to take the extreme step.”
