Chandigarh administration mulls over shuttle bus services for tourist places

In a bid to facilitate tourists, Chandigarh Administration has asked various departments to explore the option of providing shuttle bus services, particularly for major destinations in the Union Territory (UT).

The matter of shuttle buses and other road safety issues were discussed in a meeting on Friday under the chairmanship of Chandigarh’s home secretary-cum-secretary transport.

“The chairperson instructed the departments concerned to explore the provision of providing shuttle bus services for Sukhna Lake, Rock Garden and Bird Park along with the sites where the visitors’ vehicles can be parked, to ferry the visitors,” a statement issued by the UT administration after the meeting said.

The provision of additional parking facilities around the Sukhna Lake Area to ease the parking issues and traffic congestion at Sukhna Lake, Rock Garden and Bird Park was also discussed in the meeting.

The members also decided to have a provision of “Traffic Police Assistance Booths” at eight major intersections in the city and requisite earmarking of pick-and-drop points for auto rickshaws on Madhya Marg under a pilot project, and auto rickshaw stand-cum-pick and drop facility at eight locations in the city.

Also, the issue of the provision of an extreme left lane for buses/ trucks/ taxis/ commercial vehicles on the city roads was discussed. The members suggested that construction of table tops should be done at all Black Spots as per IRC standards, and directed the engineering wing to expedite the work of earmarking of auto stands and pick-and-drop points, and segregation of cycle track on priority on Purv and Madhya Marg.

Physical segregation of cycle tracks marked on main carriageway roads i.e. on Uttar Marg from Lake Sports Complex up to CM Punjab residence, on Madhya Marg from Transport Light Point up to Dhillon Barrier, and on Purv Marg from Transport Light Point to Tribune Chowk were also discussed apart from the functioning of street lights.

The meeting was attended by the SSP/ traffic and security, commissioner Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, chief architect, chief engineer, representatives of UT engineering department, Municipal Corporation Chandigarh, Urban Town Planning Department/UT, ADC UT Chandigarh, Transport.
